How Salary to Hourly Conversion Works

To find your hourly rate from a salary, you divide your total pay by the number of hours you actually work in the same time period. For a standard full-time job, that means dividing your annual salary by 2,080 hours (40 hours per week × 52 weeks).

So a $50,000 per year salary works out to about $24.04 per hour. If you get two weeks of paid vacation, you still divide by 2,080 because those weeks are paid — you only adjust the hours if you take unpaid time off.

Part-time workers and those on non-standard schedules should enter their actual hours per day and days per week so the calculator uses the right number of annual hours.

Salary to Hourly Formula

The math is simple once you know your annual hours:

  • Hours/Week = Hours/Day × Days/Week
  • Annual Hours = Hours/Week × Weeks/Year
  • Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ Annual Hours

Example: $60,000/yr ÷ (8 hrs × 5 days × 52 weeks) = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85/hr

For monthly salary: multiply by 12 first to get annual, then divide by annual hours. For biweekly: multiply by 26. For weekly: multiply by 52.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide your annual salary by the number of hours you work per year. For a full-time job at 40 hours per week and 52 weeks, that is 2,080 hours. A $52,000 salary ÷ 2,080 hours = $25.00 per hour. Adjust the hours if you work fewer weeks or have unpaid time off.
A standard full-time year in the US and Canada has 2,080 working hours (40 hrs/week × 52 weeks). In the UK, a common figure is 1,950 hours (37.5 hrs/week × 52 weeks). Australia uses 1,976 hours (38 hrs/week × 52 weeks). France uses 1,820 hours (35 hrs/week × 52 weeks). Use the actual hours you work for the most accurate hourly rate.
That depends on what you want to know. If you enter your gross (before-tax) salary, you get your gross hourly rate — useful for comparing job offers. If you enter your net take-home salary, you get your net hourly rate — useful for budgeting. This calculator lets you enter an optional tax rate in the Advanced Options to show both figures at once.
Yes. Just change the hours per day and days per week fields to match your actual schedule. For example, a 20-hour part-time week at 4 hours × 5 days gives 1,040 annual hours. Your hourly rate will be calculated based on those actual hours, not a full-time assumption.
Select "Monthly" as the pay period and enter your monthly amount. The calculator multiplies it by 12 to get your annual figure, then divides by your total annual hours. For example, $4,500/month × 12 = $54,000/year ÷ 2,080 hours = $25.96/hour.
If your vacation is paid, it does not change the hourly rate — you still divide by 52 weeks because you are paid for all 52 weeks. Only unpaid vacation weeks should be subtracted from the weeks per year. For example, if you take 2 unpaid weeks off, change the "Paid Weeks per Year" field to 50 to get the correct hourly rate.
