What Is a Time Card?

A time card — also called a timesheet or punch card — is a simple record of when you start and finish work each day. It is used all over the world to track hours worked and calculate pay correctly.

The idea is the same everywhere: write down your start time, end time, and any unpaid break for each day. Add it all up to get your total hours for the week.

This calculator does all the math for you. Enter your times, add your hourly rate if you want a pay estimate, and hit Calculate. It works for any country, any currency, and any shift pattern — including overnight shifts and split workweeks.

How Hours Are Calculated

The calculation works the same way everywhere:

  • Gross Hours = End Time − Start Time
  • Net Hours = Gross Hours − (Unpaid Break ÷ 60)
  • Weekly Total = All daily net hours added together

Example: You work 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM (9.5 hours). You take a 30-minute unpaid lunch. Net hours = 9.0. Five days = 45.0 hours total. If your overtime starts after 40 hours, you have 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours. If your country uses a different threshold — such as 38 hrs (Australia) or 48 hrs (India, UK max) — just update the OT Threshold field.

Time Card Rounding Rules

Many employers round punch times to the nearest 15 minutes for payroll. The rule must be fair — it cannot always round in the employer's favour. Most countries allow this practice when applied consistently.

  • 1–7 min past quarter: round down to the quarter hour
  • 8–14 min past quarter: round up to the next quarter hour
  • Example: Clock-in at 8:07 AM rounds to 8:00 AM. Clock-in at 8:09 AM rounds to 8:15 AM.

Use the rounding option in Advanced Options to match how your employer or payroll system calculates your hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter your start time, end time, and unpaid break minutes for each day you worked. Click the ban icon next to any day to skip it (a weekend or day off). Add your hourly rate if you want a pay estimate — in any currency. Hit "Calculate Hours & Pay" to see your total hours, overtime, and gross weekly pay.
Net hours (also called paid hours) are the hours you actually get paid for. They equal your total time at work minus any unpaid break time. If you work from 8 AM to 5 PM (9 hours) and take a 30-minute unpaid lunch, your net hours for that day are 8.5. Only net hours count toward your pay and your weekly overtime total.
This calculator handles overnight shifts. Select your start time (for example 10:00 PM) and an end time earlier in the day (for example 6:00 AM). It automatically detects that the shift crosses midnight and calculates the correct hours. This is useful for night-shift workers in hospitals, factories, transport, security, and many other industries worldwide.
First calculate your weekly gross pay using your time card. Then select "Biweekly" in the Pay Period dropdown. The calculator multiplies your weekly result by two to show your estimated biweekly paycheck. Keep in mind that overtime is usually calculated per workweek, not per pay period — so each week's overtime is counted on its own.
Common reasons include: forgetting to enter break time, mixing up AM and PM, or leaving a day active when you did not work it. Click the ban icon next to any day you did not work to skip it. Also check that your start time comes before your end time — unless you work overnight, in which case the calculator handles it automatically.
It depends on your country. In the USA and Canada, overtime is typically weekly — after 40 hours (or 44 in Ontario). In Australia, it starts after 38 hours. In the UK and Ireland, there is no fixed overtime rate by law, but many employers pay extra after contracted hours. Countries like India, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Uganda trigger overtime daily — usually after 8 or 9 hours in a single day. Use the "OT Threshold" field to set your weekly limit, and "Daily OT Threshold" in Advanced Options for daily rules.
Yes — this tool works for any country. Change the currency symbol to match your local currency (KSh for Kenya, UGX for Uganda, ₹ for India, A$ for Australia, £ for UK, € for Ireland, ₱ for Philippines, and more). Set the OT Threshold to match your country's rules — for example 38 hrs for Australia, 48 hrs for India and Uganda, 52 hrs for Kenya, or 45 hrs for Tanzania. For daily overtime rules (common in India, Philippines, Tanzania), use the Daily OT Threshold field in Advanced Options. All calculations are done in your browser — no data is sent anywhere.

Total Weekly Hours by Daily Shift Length

How many hours you work in a week based on your daily schedule and number of days worked. Includes 30-minute unpaid break deduction.

Shift Length(gross hrs/day) 4 Days 5 Days 6 Days 7 Days Net hrs/day(minus 30 min break)

Net hours subtract a standard 30-minute unpaid break. Adjust the break field in the calculator for your actual break time. Cells highlighted in green may trigger overtime at a 40-hour weekly threshold. Your country may use a different threshold — adjust the OT Threshold field in the calculator.

Weekly Gross Pay at Common Hourly Wages

Regular and overtime gross pay estimates for common hourly rates and total hours worked (1.5× OT rate after 40 hrs).

Hourly Rate 35 hrs(no OT) 40 hrs(no OT) 45 hrs(+5 OT hrs) 50 hrs(+10 OT hrs) 55 hrs(+15 OT hrs) 60 hrs(+20 OT hrs)

OT pay uses 1.5× multiplier. All figures are gross (before tax). OT rates vary by country — India uses 2×, Philippines 1.25×, France 1.25–1.5×. Symbol shown is $.

Break Time Impact on Net Daily Hours

See how different break lengths reduce your paid hours at common shift lengths.

Shift (gross) No Break 15 min break 30 min break 45 min break 60 min break 90 min break

Only unpaid breaks reduce your net hours. Paid rest periods — common in Australia, UK, and many other countries — do not reduce your paid hours and should not be entered in the break field.
