Commission vs Base Pay Comparison

How Sales Commission Works

A sales commission is a payment you receive as a percentage of the revenue you bring in. The more you sell, the more you earn. Most commission-based roles combine a base salary with a variable commission so your total income grows with your performance.

The most common structure is a flat-rate commission — for example, 5% on every dollar you sell. If you close $20,000 in deals at 5%, you earn $1,000. Some companies use tiered rates that increase once you hit certain thresholds, rewarding top performers more.

Commission structures vary widely across industries. Real estate, insurance, financial services, and SaaS sales all have different standard rates and payout rules. This calculator handles all the main types.

Commission Formula

The math behind commission is simple once you know the structure:

  • Flat Rate: Commission = Sales × Rate%
  • Tiered: Each bracket gets its own rate; total = sum of all brackets
  • Split: Your share = Total commission × Your split%
  • With Base: Total pay = Base salary + Commission

Example: $50,000 in sales at 6% = $3,000 commission. Add a $4,000 base and your monthly total is $7,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply your total sales amount by your commission rate (as a decimal). For example: $30,000 in sales × 0.06 (6% rate) = $1,800 commission. If you have a base salary of $3,500, your total monthly pay is $5,300.
A flat commission applies the same percentage to all sales. A tiered commission pays a lower rate on early sales and a higher rate once you cross threshold levels. For example: 4% on the first $10,000, then 7% on anything above that. Tiered structures reward you more for closing bigger deals or hitting high monthly targets.
Yes — commission is ordinary income and is taxed at your marginal rate. If your employer pays commission as a separate supplemental check, they may withhold at a fixed 22% federal rate for simplicity. At tax filing time, your actual liability is based on your full year's income and deductions. High commission months may push some earnings into a higher bracket temporarily.
A draw is an advance payment against future commissions. Your employer pays you a guaranteed minimum each period. Once you earn enough commission to exceed the draw, you keep everything above it. If you earn less than the draw, the difference may be carried forward as a debt against your next commission check. Some draws are non-recoverable (a true guarantee).
Quota attainment is how much of your sales target you actually hit, expressed as a percentage. For example, if your quota is $40,000 and you sold $32,000, your attainment is 80%. Some commission plans pay a lower rate below 100% attainment and a higher accelerator rate above it to incentivize overachievement.
Yes — this is called a split commission. It happens when an inside rep and field rep co-sell a deal, or when a manager gets a small override on their team's revenue. The total commission stays the same; it's divided between the parties based on an agreed percentage. Some companies use 50/50 splits; others use 70/30 or custom ratios depending on who drove the deal.
