Night shift pay is extra money added on top of your regular hourly wage for working during overnight hours. Most employers offer this as a shift differential — either a set percentage or a flat extra amount per hour.
In the United States, federal law does not require employers to pay more for night work. However, many companies offer it voluntarily, and federal civilian government employees are entitled to a 10% night differential by statute for hours between 6pm and 6am.
In countries like France, Brazil, the Philippines, and many EU member states, night shift premiums are required by law. The overtime pay rules may also apply on top of your night differential if you work extra hours during your shift.
The calculation depends on which differential type you use:
Example (percentage): $20/hr base × 15% diff = $23/hr night rate. 8 hrs × 5 nights = 40 hrs × $23 = $920/week. Differential earned = $120/week.
