Night Shift vs Day Pay Comparison

How Night Shift Pay Works

Night shift pay is extra money added on top of your regular hourly wage for working during overnight hours. Most employers offer this as a shift differential — either a set percentage or a flat extra amount per hour.

In the United States, federal law does not require employers to pay more for night work. However, many companies offer it voluntarily, and federal civilian government employees are entitled to a 10% night differential by statute for hours between 6pm and 6am.

In countries like France, Brazil, the Philippines, and many EU member states, night shift premiums are required by law. The overtime pay rules may also apply on top of your night differential if you work extra hours during your shift.

Night Shift Pay Formula

The calculation depends on which differential type you use:

  • Percentage Differential:
    Night Rate = Base Rate × (1 + Diff% ÷ 100)
  • Flat Rate Differential:
Night Rate = Base Rate + Flat Amount per Hour
  • Fixed Night Rate:
Night Pay = Fixed Rate × Total Night Hours

Example (percentage): $20/hr base × 15% diff = $23/hr night rate. 8 hrs × 5 nights = 40 hrs × $23 = $920/week. Differential earned = $120/week.

Who Earns Night Shift Differential?

Night shift differentials are common in industries that operate around the clock. Workers most likely to receive overnight pay premiums include:

  • Nurses, hospital staff, and healthcare workers
  • Manufacturing and factory floor workers
  • Warehouse, logistics, and distribution center employees
  • Security guards and night watch staff
  • Hotel front desk and hospitality staff
  • Truck drivers and freight delivery workers
  • IT support, data center, and on-call tech staff
  • Federal government and civil service employees

If you're unsure whether you qualify, check your employment contract, collective bargaining agreement, or company pay policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

First, decide which method your employer uses. For a percentage differential: multiply your base rate by the differential percentage, then add it to your base rate to get your night rate. For example: $20/hr base + 15% = $3/hr differential = $23/hr night rate. Multiply that by your total night hours to get total earnings. For a flat differential, simply add the flat amount per hour to your base rate, then multiply by total hours.
There is no single universal standard. In the United States, 10%–15% is most common. US federal civilian workers receive a flat 10% by law. Healthcare and hospital workers often receive 12%–15%. EU Directive countries may require 25%–30%. The Philippines mandates a 10% differential by law. Some employers skip percentages entirely and offer a flat extra per hour, such as $1.50 to $3.00 per hour, especially in manufacturing or security.
Yes. Your night shift differential and night pay are treated as ordinary earned income, so they are taxed at the same rate as your regular wages. Because your total paycheck is higher when you earn night differential, your total withholding may be slightly higher for that pay period — but your tax rate itself does not change. The optional tax field in this calculator lets you see an estimated take-home after a flat withholding rate.
In most cases, yes. Under the FLSA, the "regular rate" used to calculate overtime must include shift differentials and premiums that are not excluded by statute. This means if you work overtime hours during a night shift, your overtime rate should typically be based on your night rate (base + differential), not just your base rate. Check with your payroll department or a labor attorney to confirm how your employer applies this rule.
Usually yes — shift differentials are typically tied to the hours worked during qualifying night periods, not to full-time or part-time status. If your employer's policy pays a night differential to all employees working between certain hours, part-time workers should receive the same premium for those qualifying hours. However, policies vary, so always check your employment agreement or HR policy to confirm.
If the differential is written into your employment contract or a union agreement, your employer cannot remove it without renegotiating those terms. If it was offered as a voluntary, discretionary benefit with no contractual obligation, the employer may have more flexibility to change it — but usually must provide reasonable advance notice. Always review your offer letter, contract, or collective bargaining agreement to understand your rights.
