What Is Price Per Unit?

Price per unit tells you exactly how much you pay for one single unit of a product — whether that unit is one item, one gram, one ounce, or one liter. It makes it simple to compare products that come in different sizes or package counts.

For example, a 12-pack of soda for $4.80 costs $0.40 per can. A 6-pack for $2.94 costs $0.49 per can. Even though the 6-pack is cheaper to buy upfront, the 12-pack gives you more value per dollar.

Stores are often required by law to display shelf unit prices — our calculator does the same math in seconds for any product, any unit, and any currency.

Unit Price Formula

The calculation is simple:

  • Unit Price = Total Price ÷ Total Quantity
  • With Discount: Unit Price = (Total Price × (1 − Discount%)) ÷ Quantity
  • With Tax: Unit Price = (Total Price × (1 + Tax%)) ÷ Quantity
  • True Cost: Unit Price = (Price + Shipping) ÷ Quantity

Example: 500g of oats for $3.50 = $0.007/g or $7.00/kg. Compare any two products by converting to the same unit type.

Smart Buying Tips

Knowing the unit price is just the start. Keep these in mind before you buy:

  • Shelf life matters. A lower unit price on a bulk item is only useful if you can use it all before it expires.
  • Factor in storage. Buying 10 kg of flour saves money only if you have space to store it.
  • Include shipping. A cheaper online price may become more expensive once delivery is added. Use the shipping field in the calculator to check.
  • Watch for shrinkflation. Manufacturers sometimes reduce package size while keeping the same price. Always compare unit price, not sticker price.
  • Brand vs. store generic. Generic brands often have the same or lower unit price. Unit pricing removes brand bias from the comparison.

Common Questions

Divide the total price by the total quantity. For example: a pack of 36 pens costs $9.00. $9.00 ÷ 36 = $0.25 per pen. For weight, if a 400g bag of rice costs $1.60, the price per gram is $1.60 ÷ 400 = $0.004/g, or $4.00 per kilogram.
Not always. The lowest unit price is usually the best financial choice, but consider whether you'll use the full quantity before it expires, whether you have space to store it, and whether quality is the same. A higher unit price is sometimes acceptable for better quality or convenience — but unit price helps you make that decision with clear numbers rather than guesswork.
From a consumer's perspective, unit price and unit cost mean the same thing — what you pay per single unit of a product. In business and manufacturing, unit cost refers to the total cost to produce one unit (including materials, labor, and overhead). Our calculator works from the buyer's side, giving you the unit price you actually pay.
Shrinkflation happens when a manufacturer reduces the package size without lowering the price — or even while raising it slightly. The product looks the same on the shelf, but you get less. Comparing unit prices over time is the best way to detect shrinkflation. If a product used to be $3.00 for 500g and is now $3.00 for 450g, the unit price went up even though the label price didn't change.
Yes. The calculator works for any quantity and any unit — great for comparing supplier quotes, bulk orders, or wholesale pricing. Use the shipping field to add freight costs so the comparison reflects the true delivered cost per unit. The multi-product compare mode lets you evaluate up to four suppliers or SKUs at the same time.
Open the Advanced Options section and enter the discount percentage, tax/VAT rate, and shipping cost. The calculator will add shipping to the total price, apply the tax rate, and subtract any discount — then divide the final amount by the quantity to give you the all-in unit price. This tells you what each unit truly costs after every expense is included.

1 kg = 1000g = 35.274 oz = 2.2046 lb. Use these to compare products sold by different weight units.
